Skin Deep – Self Portrait
Mixed Media Hemp Canvas and Silk Thread, 64 x 64cm
Stinging Nettles are used to make the pigment for this portrait, their sting is only skin deep. However, the plant itself has many beneficial qualities both to humans and the soil. The cancer I had removed left a lot of stitches, some people found this quite confronting, and it made them feel uncomfortable. Our society tends to shun imperfections, the resulting scar I see as a celebration of the passing of time, that I am healed and it was only skin deep, the scar is part of my story.
