The tanks are low and the vines are hanging from the trees its good weather to dry fibre… but I am obsessed with dyeing at the moment, and for good reason, I am going to be selling my scarves in a beautiful little shop in Nest at the Old Bakery in Eumundi. My dreams are slowly becoming reality, as I am able to spend more time in the workshop making.
After 18months of learning, I have such expectations of what my finished dyeing is going to look like, but have to continually let go and accept the results that appear. Such is the nature of the eco and natural dyeing process I have chosen to use.
For this collection I harvested rather than waited for windfall… as there isn’t any wind at the moment. So with ladder in the paddock I reach for the sky and choose carefully where there is plenty. Also a quick trip to the market lets me gather some leaves from the rose stall and kangaroo paw flowers from the side of the road.
In the mail arrives a surprise package from an online friend who makes violins in the states, its her pernambuco wood shavings from the bows. So I carefully prepare a small amount of dye to play with, being very respectful and aware that I do have one of the worlds precious resources in my pot.
Then begin bundling, it always takes longer than I think to place, roll and bind the material together, I get lost in my own world, and listen to the birds. I set an alarm so I remember to pick up the kids from school. I am startled by a few kangaroos jumping up the drive as they make their way up to the dam, it really is dry, we saw wallabies this morning and a koala yesterday. All the animals are coming out of the bush to the water.
The dog goes crazy as a kookaburra and all the little birds screech and swoop a goanna that is running up a tree, (its over a metre long) I havent seen one of those for a long time.
The pot boils for a few hours, then I let it sit for days, I am the most impatient dyer and sneak down to the workshop and unroll just one… then I really do have to leave the rest so time can work its magic….. in the pot. This range is 100% cotton, vegan friendly and the address for Nest is 101 Memorial Drive, Eumundi, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
